Opposition to Plans for a Nearby Storage Facility

By Alice Baynes, 340 Fiddlers Point Dr

Dear Neighbor,

We, Concerned Residents of Marsh Creek, are asking for your help in fighting the development of a 24,000 square foot commercial building on the corner of Mizell Rd and 16th St, adjacent to the retention pond.  The proposed development would construct an indoor and outdoor storage facility for RVs and boats.

The proposed site is surrounded by 3 residential communities (Marsh Creek, Commodores Club, and Ocean Cay) and is not compatible with the surrounding residential and wildlife refuge areas for commercial development.

The green space on Anastasia Island is rapidly disappearing and this is just another example of such encroachment.  The proposed site for the project is home to many of the wonderful wildlife and birds that we all enjoy in our community.  There is a possible impact on the ecosystem from water runoff and the wonderful work done by The Ark Wildlife Care and Sanctuary would be affected.  The intersection of Mizell Rd and 16th St is already busy and additional RV and boat traffic will affect all of us.  Here is a link for an overhead view of the project (you may need to click zoom out in the upper left corner after opening the link)  Project Viewer

What we need from you now is to show up at the community meeting organized by the project management company of the developer.  Their hope is to defuse opposition prior to applying to the county for rezoning of the property.  A strong turnout from the surrounding communities will make it clear that we oppose this project.

The meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 20 at 6 pm at the Anastasia Island Branch Library, located at 124 Seagrove Main St, St Augustine Beach.  If you cannot attend, consider sending an email to Roy Alaimo, our District 3 County Commissioner, at bcc3ralaimo@sjcfl.us outlining your concerns.

Please come out and help to defeat this project and share this information with your friends.

  1. Please consider supporting the effort to stop this development. This will destroy native habitat for wildlife, will adversely affect storm water drainage and increase vehicle traffic. In my opinion St. Augustine has built up too much, too fast. The community is better off without more acres of concrete. There are many other options for people to park their boats, RV’s and excess possessions.

  2. Thank you Alice for bringing this important information to the community. Since this is such an important development with a profound impact to our community, our Marsh Creek Homeowners Association, with the strong backing from the Board, should get involved and help fight this development proposal. Hopefully this will become an important item on the Boards agenda as well as a great and supportive response from all of the residents of Marsh Creek.
