Creativity is … Where You Find It

By The Bespectacled Reader

Many Marsh Creek residents know me as the writer of The Bespectacled Reader column in the late Marsh Creek News Journal.  Well, I  have missed that creative outlet and now Brian Nelson has allowed me a chance to write again for the Spoonbill Courier.

My question to you is this: what does a widow to do with an upright freezer when she already has two refrigerators at her cottage?  Well, she turns it into a storage cupboard, of course.  I have a Wurlitzer and occasionally one wishes to exchange the CD’s.

Marty’s Creative Library

Did you know said CD’s fit snugly into the shelves of a freezer door? Where else could I store my large Tupperware containers, like for pies, cakes, and leftover casseroles?  On the top shelves of the freezer, of course. And what about the infrequently used but necessary Corning ware my brother gave us as a wedding present back in 1965?  On the middle shelves, naturally!  That leaves the bottom of the freezer, an area perfect for the stacking of those books I am going to get around to reading, someday.  In this space they are safe from mildew, a plague associated with lakefront cottages that are closed up for months at a time.

So, my suggestion to you, readers, is this: When your refrigerator or freezer bites the dust, be creative.  Put it in a corner of your garage and use it for storage—unplugged, of course!  It works for me, but mine is in the lower level laundry room as I have no garage.

To complete the circle, I needed a new book to read. I didn’t have to buy one at Walmart (no book stores in Raymond, ME) or order one from Amazon, and I don’t enjoy using one of those devices and downloading a book.  I like a real book in my hands, so I trotted downstairs, opened the freezer door and Lo and Behold!  There was that stack!  I grabbed the one on top and have immersed myself in The Tenth Measure written by Brenda Lesley Segal,  an epic published in 1980, set against the background of the turbulent wars between the Jews and the Romans during the first century AD in ancient Judea.  It is fascinating and I am learning a great deal about that area of the world in those times.

See, I am still The Bespectacled Reader….

  4. Only you Marty would think of using an old refrigerator for something! GREAT idea! Hope the weather in Maine has been cooler than here. Awful heat and humidity 🤪

  5. 2 refrigerators AND a freezer? Well of course everyone would use the freezer as a storage/library!
