Here’s how to make the switch of Internet providers simple and secure.
By David Muir
Now that the IQ Fiber network is available throughout Marsh Creek many (most?) of us will sign-up for “a smarter internet choice”, adding to, or even cutting, cable entirely. (With reliable high-speed internet, streaming your favorite channels is a cheaper and more stable alternative to cable TV.)
Both cable and fiber require a modem and router, and usually they come packaged as one. If you have AT&T or Xfinity and are making the switch, be sure to return their rental equipment. (You’ll get a new modem/router from IQ Fiber for free). The most efficient way to cancel service is to schedule an appointment at the local store and bring their equipment with you. Xfinity and AT&T stores are nearby and scheduling is done easily online. When scheduling, you state your purpose, so they are prepared for your visit. My appointment at the Xfinity store at Cobblestone Village took less than five minutes with no waiting time. I was assured by the Service Rep my services (both internet and cable TV) were cancelled, prorated fees would be credited AND I was given a receipt for the returned equipment.
Before returning the rented equipment or deposing of ones you own, there’s an important security issue. Did you know that the Gateway, router and extender can be a gold mine for hackers? These devices have memory that can store various types of information, such as the network’s operating system, configuration files, passwords, and internet history. Some of this information is sensitive and personal and could be used by a hacker to access your network, devices, or online accounts.
BEFORE returning or tossing your Gateway, router or extenders, erase your personal data! You can do that by resetting the device to factory settings. It’s simple. (If you need to, search online for instructions specific to your device … like “factory reset xfinity gateway”).
Models with a dedicated pinhole are the easiest, and using the reset button works like this:
- Plug in the router and turn on
- Find the reset button (usually a small hole near the ports)
- Insert a non-metallic pointed object (toothpick) into the hole to hold down the internal button for 15-30 seconds until the LED lights power off
- Release the button, and wait for your router to power back on
Also don’t forget to remove any stickers that may have your network name or password on them.
Alternatively, when returning equipment to the provider’s store in person, you can ask the Service Rep to reset and wipe clean the device(s) while you watch. They won’t automatically do that, and who knows what happens to your devices after they toss them into the recycle bin?
If you have already returned devices without resetting to eliminate personal information, remember not to use the same password on your new network. If you did, you can change it. That is easily done on your account at the new provider’s (IQFiber’s) app or website.
Better to be safe!
Thanks for reminder & instructions to erase data before returning router.
Thanks again for very good info! I am certain xfinity does not always reset those old devices. I have often received returned devices as new to me and noted other users info. I have also been charged for returned equipment after the fact. That receipt was very important.
