Spoonbill Courier’s reporting this week suggesting that the Mizell Storage Project on ten acres of land bordering Mizell Road and 16th Street was on Thursday’s St. Johns County Planning and Zoning Agency agenda was inaccurate. It was not scheduled, but that didn’t stop opponents of the project from descending on the afternoon meeting to use the Public Discussion period to signal their opposition to the project before its official landing on the county’s doorstep in the weeks ahead.
Ed Kierce, one of Marsh Creek’s concerned homeowners, reported that ” the agenda afforded us a window during the public comments window. There were about 30-40 people in attendance from the three residential communities (Marsh Creek, Commodore Club and Ocean Cay) and approximately seven of us voiced our opposition to the project”.
Valerie Roback, a volunteer for ARK Animal Rescue which operates a small facility adjacent to the rural land targeted for rezoning into a boat and RV storage facility, also reported “… several people spoke against the proposed development … Marsh Creek residents mentioned erosion of the road around the retention pond, alongside the dam itself and a bridge that the proposed development would worsen … flooding exacerbated by filling in marshland would cause this erosion to worsen.”
While the project’s opponents continue to mobilize, still no word on when it will come up before the Planning and Zoning Agency, and later before the full county commission.
“The application is not currently scheduled for public hearing as we are still working with County staff on the application, and I do not have an anticipated timeline on when it will be scheduled”, Autumn Martinage, the project’s Senior Planner told Spoonbill Courier.
