It’s not a surprise at all to see St. Augustine rated among the South’s best beach towns. Of course it should be. The question was, where?

Coming in at the #5 spot ain’t too shabby. One could always mount the argument it should be higher.

The judges did not cite, for example, that you can drive on St. Augustine Beach. They instead drew attention to the dining and historic attractions of downtown to complement the sand and water underpinning our local tourism industry.

The judges also highly rated Key West, although any visitor to that otherwise delightful waterfront town would note its paucity of good beaches. It’s more the vibe, as it is in our town that does have a great beach.

And for the record: missing from the top 20 list is Daytona Beach. Kinda makes it an authentic contest right there.
