Ours, and Our Fathers’ (and Mothers’) Stories of Service
In a recent discussion with a friend, I was reminded of the many in our neighborhood who can claim a direct connection to the US military – (they themselves are veterans) – and still others who share an indirect connection as sons and daughters of soldiers, marines, sailors and aviators.
In past, Spoonbill Courier has published stories of heroism. We heard from veterans Stephen Lawrence and the late Ronald Estees. This year, however, we want to dig deeper and wider into our community for a broader selection of exploits by the many who have served, and even perhaps made the ultimate sacrifice.
Granted, not everyone is comfortable writing, especially about themselves, and I get it. But here is a chance to enshrine tales of service, sacrifice and heroism arm-in-arm with your neighbors.
Are you a veteran?
If you are a veteran, and have a personal story like Ron Estes did, write it up with a few photos and send it to the Spoonbill Courier.
Are you the son or daughter of a veteran?
If your mom or dad served in World War 2. the Korean War, or the Vietnam War, and you can tell their story with photos (those photos in the attic are important!), then send it to the Spoonbill Courier.
We will publish the full collection on Memorial Day, Mon, May 25, 2026.
Important
May 25 is a long way off, making it very easy to forget. Let’s not. Start work on this right away and get it off your plate. In this, the year of America’s 250th birthday, let’s get those memories recorded for history and hear the voices and stories of those who fought for and defended this nation.

Well said Brian
