Friday is Marsh Creek Night of Lights
Friday, December 12th Sundown (rain date 13th)

By Louise Nelson
Here we are again, celebrating an event we originally dreamed up in the depths of Covid. Remember that? The safest way to socialize was out in the streets. And we did, starting a bit of a tradition. Anyway, It’s time again to kick off the Holidays with Marsh Creek’s annual neighborhood Luminary Extravaganza, otherwise known as our own Night of Lights.
For newcomers, this is the evening when we line the streets with lighted candles to kick off the Holiday festivities. In the glow of the lights, there have been known to be end-of-driveway street parties, food and drink, music and street camaraderie. There is no obligation or even expectation. It has just become one of the ways Marsh Creek pulls together to initiate the Holidays. Others include lighting up your house, and/or putting out a lighted Christmas tree or decorating the lawn with electrical Santas and reindeer. It’s all in keeping with the spirit of the Night of Lights. And for those signed up, don’t forget the Spoonbill Neighbors’ Holiday Party next Sunday evening at the Club.

Luminary Supplies – the where and how
For supplies … remember this weekend craft stores (Hobby Lobby, Michael’s…) and Amazon may have sales on the candles and small paper bags you’ll need. (Thicker bags with handles proved to be the best to withstand the humidity and potential for rain). The sand? Well, there is a nearby beach as a last resort.
Another popular option is Pine Castle, a non-profit in Jacksonville that sells complete luminary kits with the proceeds supporting adults with intellectual and developmental challenges. The link is http://pinecastle.org/holiday-luminaria-kits/.
And, if you’re going to be spending the holidays in town, get some extra for Christmas Eve and light up your street one more time!
