Marsh Creek’s 3rd annual Night of Lights event at Sundown on Friday December 8th.
What is the Night of Lights?
For two years now, starting in the depths of Covid in 2021, Marsh Creek homeowners have come together to light up our community to usher in the holiday season. Hundreds of twinkling lights wound down streets and cul-de-sacs, and they looked a lot like landing lights for the coming of Santa’s sleigh. When combined with the illumination from adjacent lighted trees and homes, the net effect for this one night was a Winter Wonderland, even in snow-less St. Augustine Florida. Many homeowners held parties at their homes or on their block, encouraging neighbors to drop by for snacks and beverages. And many joined in repeating the event more quietly on Christmas Eve, as the messages of Peace and Goodwill settled on our community.
What are Luminaries, anyway?
Luminaries themselves are paper bags illuminated with candles in cups. We encourage everyone to place a series of them along the curb in front of your home, spaced every three to five (3-5) feet. Small stones or sand will be needed to hold the bags upright and in place. Historically, the luminaries represent a tradition of welcome, and Christmas luminaries, a tradition of holiday welcome.
What do I Need?
Small Bags
Votive or similar candles
Sand, pebbles or small stones
And that’s it!
Best Places to Shop?
There are lots of options: Amazon, Walmart, Hobby Lobby, Michaels & other craft stores. And of course, Pine Castle Charity (https://pinecastle.org/holiday-liminaria-kits/). This charitable organization sells a complete unit, (sand/candle/cup) ready to go, and the proceeds go to support the disabled adults who make the kits. However, the kits must be picked up at their location near I-95 and University Blvd in Jacksonville.
Pro Tips
The sturdiest bags seem to be found at Hobby Lobby. They have strong handles and a thicker quality of paper with a shine on it.
Votive candles in glass cups from the Dollar Store worked well according to a neighbor, they burned all night.
And pebbles or rocks at the bottom of the bag seem to be a better option than sand.
Stock up on your supplies now before the rush! And remember to double your order if you are here and wish to join a repeat effort on Christmas Eve.

Can we use battery operated tea-lights instead of real votives for the Marsh Creek Night of Lights? Also, do we need to notify you if we are planning to participate?
Homeowners have used battery operated lights in past and they are fine, Tara. And no need to identify anyone you’re participating. We look forward to your contribution!
