Bridge to Close Overnight, Lions to get Buffed and Mothballed, City Seawall to be Reinforced
| (JAXToday) GOODBYE, LIONS: The iconic lions that guard the west side of St. Augustine’s Bridge of Lions are taking a vacation. A project to rebuild the seawall along State Road A1A will get underway next week, and the city is removing the lions tonight to keep them safe during construction. The bridge will close to traffic at 11 p.m. tonight and will remain closed until about 5 a.m. tomorrow morning. While the two lions are in storage, local artists Joe Segal and Enzo Torcoletti will work to restore them so they’ll be looking their best when they return. The seawall project is part of a larger effort to increase the city’s resilience in the face of floods. When it’s finished in 2028, the new wall will be about 2 feet higher than the existing barrier.
