Women’s Exchange and Lincolnville Museum Offer Black History Events

1838-1890-The Long Road to Freedom

The St. Augustine Woman’s Exchange and The Lincolnville Museum and Cultural Center announce a weekend of riveting events, presentations, and exhibits.  The exhibits are inspired by the New York Times article, “Is This the Most Notable (Purple) Wedding Dress Ever Worn?” published in October, 2023, while showcasing African-American St. Augustine during the same period when Frederick Douglass was known as the “Prophet of Freedom”.

  • Lincolnville Museum: 1838-1890: A Brief Expose on African American St. Augustine.

Friday, February 10th & Monday, February 13 Buy Tickets at the Door

Special Exhibit: Anna Murray Douglass’s Story at The Peña-Peck House open to the public from 11 am – 4 pm with expert presenters Lana Turner & Cassandra Bromfield.  $5 entry fee (students and military are free). 143 St. George Street, St. Augustine 32084. Tickets purchased at the door.

Saturday, February 11th    

Ticketed Special Exhibit, Lunch & Tour at The Peña-Peck House at 11:30 am. Join us for a talk on Anna’s life, legacy and impact on the abolitionist movement presented by Lana Turner, Chair of the Literary Society based in New York City.  Learn the story about the anniversary dress, designed in 2022 by Cassandra Bromfield, a prominent dress designer from New York City, for the 184th anniversary celebration of Frederick and Anna’s Wedding. Sunday, February 12th

Ticketed Brunch & Exhibits at 12:00 pm the Lincolnville Museum & Cultural Center.   • Lincolnville Museum: 1838-1890: A Brief Expose on  African American St. Augustine. Learn what was happening in African American St. Augustine from Florida statehood through the post-reconstruction in including post-Civil War fashion.
