Hello Marsh Creekers!
Phew! Welcome to Summer!
It’s been quite a year. Spoonbill Neighbors held so many activities, it’s time for a summer siesta!
With neighbors heading out to escape the heat, Spoonbill Neighbors will dial back activities, placing the following on hiatus until the fall: Arts and Crafts, Dining Out Ladies, Happy Hour, Garden Club, Men’s Kayaking, and Running.
Now here are highlights from May!
Sue Whittle, lead for Outside Marsh Creek Walks, took the group through Historic Lincolnville on May 6th.. Lincolnville was established by freed Blacks following the American Civil War on the southwest peninsula of the “nation’s oldest city.” The community was designated as an historic district in 1991 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Sue printed historic details of the various buildings along her route for each participant. One walker described the walk as “enlightening”. Seems it was so captivating, no one thought to take photos. Next time!
The Dining Out Group met at Playa Chac-Mool on May 10th, the under-the-radar Mexican restaurant on the beach. Ken Wasmer, the group lead, describes the food as “very good”; it offers authentic Mexican specialties. The group was seated in an open-air area (a roof with screen) on a very pleasant night. Ken highly recommends it.
Happy Hour was held at Meri-Kathryn and John Peed’s on May 13th. It was an enjoyable evening; the weather was temperate. Lots of delicious appetizers and wine. Neighbors were so engaged, again, no one remembered to take photographs. ☹
Lunch Bunch diners gathered at the MCCC La Mesita Dining Room on May 18th. Delicious lunch, lots of conversation and camaraderie as usual with this group. This time, photos were taken but didn’t pass muster. Again … next time!
Dining In Group A met at the amazing home of Stan and Christine Penton on May 20th and enjoyed the views out into the marsh and pond. Stan served a delicious standing rib roast with Yorkshire pudding. Patty Damon and Rich Bittinger provided roasted carrots and homemade horseradish sauce made with crème fresh. Bill and Valerie Crooks finished the meal perfectly with a Caesar salad, homemade croutons, and anchovies especially chosen for Donna and Frank Delzingaro, who capped the gastronomic event with Frank’s signature Hawaiian pineapple cake. It was a perfect evening with a lot of laughs and a surprise visit at the end from Lorri Maloney and Tim Nichols.
Dining In Group B pulled up chairs at Ken and Sharon Wasmer’s home. Ken smoked baby back ribs as the main entree. Guests contributed appetizers of grilled shrimp and mushroom puffs, side dishes of potato salad, fruit salad, rice and bean salad and Caprese salad. The delicious finale was banana pudding!
