St. Augustine Music Festival Hits Milestone

A Community Treasure Turns 20: The St. Augustine Music Festival Celebrates Two Decades of Free Music

By Jane Weizmann

This year, the St. Augustine Music Festival (SAMF) celebrates its 20th Anniversary Season, marking two decades of bringing internationally acclaimed musicians to our community while remaining true to a simple but powerful mission: making exceptional music accessible to everyone, completely free of charge..

Founded in 2006 by husband-and-wife musicians Jorge Peña and Jin Kim-Peña, the festival began with an ambitious vision. What if a community could enjoy performances by musicians from major orchestras and conservatories without the barrier of ticket prices? Twenty years later, that vision has grown into one of Florida’s largest free classical music festivals, welcoming thousands of audience members each season.

This year’s anniversary festival concludes June 26–28 at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine, featuring programs that showcase both beloved classics and American masterworks. The festival’s final weekend includes acclaimed violinist Nigel Armstrong, Aaron Copland’s iconic Appalachian Spring, and a family-friendly performance of Carnival of the Animals.

But the celebration does not end there.

On July 3, the festival expands beyond the cathedral walls and onto the historic grounds of the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument for a special event titled “Independence on the Ramparts: America 250 in Brass, Fife & Drum.”

Presented in partnership with the National Park Service and the St. Johns Cultural Council, the event helps launch local observances of America’s 250th Anniversary.

Beginning at 11:30 a.m., period fife and drum musicians will perform throughout the fort, recreating the sounds that accompanied military life during the nation’s earliest years. Visitors will hear the music that soldiers and citizens might have experienced during the Revolutionary era.

At 1:00, 2:00, 3:00, and 4:00 p.m., a brass quintet will present patriotic and historically inspired music from within the Castillo. Each performance begins with a ceremonial trumpet call and concludes with a cannon firing, creating a dramatic combination of music and living history against one of America’s most iconic backdrops.

For many residents, the St. Augustine Music Festival has become a cherished annual tradition. Families introduce children to live classical music. Retirees gather with friends before concerts. Visitors discover that one of the city’s greatest cultural treasures is available to everyone, regardless of financial means.

Perhaps that is the festival’s most enduring accomplishment. In an era when many cultural experiences come with increasingly high ticket prices, SAMF has remained steadfast in its commitment to free admission. The result is a uniquely welcoming environment where seasoned music lovers sit alongside first-time concertgoers, creating a shared experience that reflects the best of community life.

As the festival celebrates twenty years, it also celebrates the volunteers, donors, musicians, and audience members who have made its success possible. Their support has helped establish St. Augustine as a destination for outstanding musical performances while enriching the cultural life of our city.

Whether you are a longtime festival supporter or have never attended a concert, this anniversary season offers a wonderful opportunity to experience what has made the St. Augustine Music Festival such a beloved community institution.

Twenty years ago, it began with a vision. Today, it stands as one of St. Augustine’s most inspiring success stories—proof that great music, shared freely, can strengthen and enrich an entire community.
